“EMA’s human medicines committee (CHMP) has recommended the suspension of all ranitidine medicines in the EU due to the presence of low levels of an impurity called N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA).
NDMA is classified as a probable human carcinogen (a substance that could cause cancer) based on animal studies.
So we have stopped patients taking Ranitidine and instead advise them to take over the counter indigestion remedies such as Gaviscon for 3-4 weeks. You may not need Ranitidine if symptoms are controlled with over the counter indigestion remedies such as Gaviscon.
If you think your symptoms are not controlled, please contact Trinity Medical Centre”.
